It is essential to follow the “golden rules” of the CASES security reflexes to maintain your IT security:
Passwords: No entry
Passwords are the key to your data and online accounts. Of course it is very tempting to use simple passwords such as your children’s names or your date of birth. The problem is finding a password that you will remember easily but is difficult for other people to guess.
(More information can be found in the CASES rule on « Choisir et utiliser correctement un mot de passe » and / or « Mots de passe »).
Virus protection: Immunise your computer
Even a computer must be immunised to remain healthy and armed against worms and viruses. You must install an anti-virus program to surf the Internet safely and you must update it regularly. You can also use anti-virus services provided by your ISP.
(More information can be found in the CASES article on « Antivirus » and / or « Testez votre logiciel antivirus »).
Firewall: Well-armed against attacks
Install a firewall and use it properly. This allows you not only to counter attacks or suspicious connections that may be caused by viruses, worms or Trojans but also to avoid unintentionally divulging personal and confidential information.
(More information can be found under « Activez le firewall de Windows XP », « Firewall » and / or « Firewall »).
Anti-spyware: Countering organised spying
Make your e-banking or e-Commerce transactions secure by installing anti-spyware that your computer can use to search regularly for harmful programs.
(More information can be found in the CASES dossiers on « Nettoyer son ordinateur », « Spyware », and / or « Spyware »).
Security patches: Making everything watertight
Every day pirates look for and find security gaps in operating systems. There is only one defence – the patches supplied by the relevant software companies. Like the anti-virus program, the operating system must also be maintained continuously. This includes regular updates to counter risks such as worms, viruses and Trojans.
>(More information can be found under « Security patches: Making everything watertight », « Mettez à jour vos applications » and « Patch »).
